At Smart3dpt, we couldn't let this innovation pass us by. We already have the machine on our test bench, and after analyzing the main international reviews and our own initial experience, we've compiled everything you need to know about the X2D.

What Makes the Bambu Lab X2D Special?

The major innovation of the X2D is its dual extrusion system with mechanical switching. Unlike traditional systems that use two heavy motors on the X-axis, the X2D combines a Direct Drive extruder (for the main material) with an auxiliary Bowden extruder (ideal for support material).

Based on our tests at Smart3dpt and the consensus of expert communities (such as Tom's Hardware and Thomas Sanladerer), here is our honest assessment:

✅ Strengths (Pros)

  • True Dual Extrusion: Almost zero waste in two-color prints or with supports, saving immense time and material compared to the traditional AMS system.
  • Perfect Support Removal: The ability to use dedicated interface materials (like PVA or specific support filaments) leaves immaculate contact surfaces.
  • Actively Heated Chamber (65°C): Excellent for engineering materials like ABS, ASA, and Nylon, eliminating warping problems.
  • Superior Air Filtration: The HEPA + Activated Carbon system makes it safe for use in offices and enclosed environments.
  • Competitive Price: With a base price around $649 (approx. €629), it offers industrial machine features at a consumer price.

❌ Weaknesses (Cons)

  • Auxiliary Nozzle Limitations: Being a Bowden system, the second nozzle is less precise, slower, and not suitable for printing flexible materials (TPU).
  • TPU Restrictions: The machine is limited to stiffer TPU ("TPU for AMS"), not handling very soft variants well.
  • Limited Flow Calibration: Advanced dynamic calibration only works on the main nozzle (Direct Drive).
  • Noise Level: Despite improvements, it remains a noisy machine when operating at high speeds, not ideal for bedrooms.
